The HM-1 was a 1936 joint project of racing pilot Frank Hawks and engineer Lowell Miller. The flush fitting pilot’s canopy could be raised and tilted forward to increase pilot visibility and act as a windshield during take-off and landing. After being damaged in a hard landing incident the aircraft was sold off. It was rebuilt and modified to become a racer again, as well as a potential military aircraft. It was variously designated as the Miller HM-2, Miller Aircraft Co. MAC-1 and, finally, the Military Aircraft Co. HM-1. After racing once more in 1938, during a high-speed demonstration for potential military contracts a wing separated. The pilot was able to bail out but the aircraft was destroyed.
