From a correspondent - This is the Luscombe which flew the Atlantic, both ways in 1953. The pilot was a San Francisco watchmaker named Peter Gluckmann. The Luscombe was temporarily fitted with extra wing tanks which were removed upon it's return by which time the aerodrome he had left from had closed. The aircraft was fitted with a radio compass, its only navigation aid and flare dischargers for emergency landings at night. In 1999 I flew in this Luscombe whilst attending the Sentimental Journey even at Loch Haven PA with owner Richard Marcus who had her based in Canada as CF-EPO. Only remaining evidence of her Atlantic flight was four small circular blank covers where the flares had been. Tragically Mr Gluckmann tried to fly the Pacific in a V-tail Bonanaza and has never been since.
