The Type S 'Spezial' is the first of the 4-aileron 'Specials', fully aerobatic biplanes derived from tbe original Z-1 prototype, D692 (G-BVAW). It was the forerunner of the Type Z-1R (or RA- widebody model) a heavier machine with reduced stagger and slightly more wing area, adaped from the S to accommodate the Rotec R2800, 110 hp. geared 7-cylinder radial engine. In 2016, A Type is flying in Germany, powered by a Hirth in-line and two S-Types are being built in Normandy, one nearly complete, equipped with a vintage Praga D 75 hp. motor. The term 'Stummelflitzer' is derived from the German word 'Stummel' for stump, or 'clipped' in this case, as in 'Stummelhabicht' (Stump Hawk) in reference to the shortened wingspan of the S and R by comparison with the original, two-aileron Flitzer type.
