It was built as a short-wing Air Force model SA-16A but then was transferred to the Coast Guard as a model UF-1G all before 1962. It was then converted into a long wing model UF-2G which means it officially became an HU-16E after 1962. And after that, it was converted once more in 1983, into a civilian model G-111.
