Close up of the three cylinder CHW engine fitted to Red Robin. The aircraft was part of the RAF St Athan Historic Aircraft Collection. The year is an estimate. The aircraft was designed and constructed by Mr CH Watkins of Cardiff and was stored in a garage from its last appearance at a Swansea exhibition in 1948 to its discovery in 1957. CH Watkins, a WWI test pilot claimed to be the first person to use a 'modern' wing section instead of the heavily undercambered section used by most designers in the year of its manufacture, 1910. From then until its last flight in 1917, the aircraft flew mostly at night due to local resentment, which blamed CHW's flying for all sorts of problems.
