The aircraft was operating one of a series of charter flights on behalf of Berolina, the state travel agency of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Most flights operated out to Dresden, returning from Leipzig 12 days later. The crew would serve the passengers with a glass of champaigne to celebrate the aircrafts entry into GDR airspace.
