Photographed in the static display during Air Tournament International 92 at Boscombe. This Tristar is ex-British Airways G-BFCC and was named whilst in service with the airline as 'The English Mist Rose'. She was delivered to British Airways on the 29th April 1979 before being acquired by the Royal Air Force on the 17th February 1983. One of nine L-1011-500s operated by the RAF, six ex-BA machines and three ex-Pan Am, they were bought in the aftermath of the Falklands War to enhance the long range capabilities of the RAF in the transport and air-to-air refuelling roles. This example is one of four KC1s and can be used in either role. They differ from the K1 version in having a cargo door. Now in the twilight of their career these aircraft are shortly to be replaced by the Airbus A330 MRTT under the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft program.
