Ohio Air National Guard KC-135R arriving at IAT93. One of the 500 airframes re-engined with the CFM International CFM56 turbo-fan engine (military designation is the F-108) produced by General Electric and SNECMA. This engine is capable of producing approximately 22,500lbf of thrust, nearly a 100% increase over the original Pratt & Whitney J-57 engines. These re-engined tankers, can transfer up to 50% more fuel on a long duration sortie, are 25% more fuel efficient, cost 25% less to operate and are 96% quieter than the original KC-135A (noise levels on takeoff were reduced from 126 to 99 decibels). The KC-135R's operational range is 60% greater than the KC-135E for comparable fuel offloads, providing a wider range of basing options. More recently this example was being operated by the Kansas ANG.
