The F-102 was used by the United States Air Force as an interceptor and as such they formed the backbone of the USAF's air defenses in the late 1950s, entering service in 1956. They were the USAF's first operational delta-winged aircraft, their development was long and troubled and by the early 1960s they were already being supplemented by the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo. They did, however see operational service in Vietnam. Many F-102s were transferred to United States Air National Guard units by the mid-to-late 1960s, and the type was retired from operational service in 1976, being replaced by the Convair F-106 Delta Darts and the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II. This one was last assigned to the 159th FIS, Florida Air National Guard, based at Jacksonville. She was initially retired to MASDC, Davis-Monthan AFB and was allocated the Inventory Code FJ0041. She was photographed at Pima before being restored, she now wears the markings of the 327th FIS, based at George AFB, California. She is displayed at Pima courtesy of the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.
