Photographed while awaiting restoration this C-117D started life as a USAAF C-47B 43-49663 (c/n 26924). She was later transferred to the US Navy as a R4D-6 before being converted as an R4D-8 and given a new construction number. The US Navy had 100 R4D-5s and R4D-6s converted to R4D-8 standards. Known as the Super DC-3, Super Three or Super Gooneybird they were later redesignted as the C-117D and featured larger wings and tail surfaces, more powerful engines and a fully enclosed, retractable under-carriage. Since this photograph was taken she has been repainted in the markings of H & MS-27 (Marine Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron), based at Cherry Point, North Carolina. She is displayed at Pima courtesy of the National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, Florida.
