When a new aircraft was needed to support the remote Distant Early Warning Line 'DEW' radar stations the USAF turned to the ubiquitous C-130 Hercules. It was found during testing that the 'Herc' was easily adapted to flying resupply missions in the far northern arctic regions of North America. Twelve of these 'D' model 'Hercs' were built in 1958, their ski/wheel landing gear allowed them to operate from conventional runways or ice and snow. The 'D' model served until the mid-1980s when they were replaced by ski-equipped LC-13Hs. This one wears the markings of the 109th Tactical Airlift Group, New York Air National Guard, based at Schenectady County Airport, New York. She is displayed at Pima courtesy of the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. She was parked in the storage area of the museum on this visit and was yet to have her nose undercarriage ski re-fitted.
