Originally known as the F11F before being redesignated as the F-11A under the 1962 United Stated Tri-Service aircraft designation system. The Tiger was a single-seat, carrier based fighter aircaft. The Tiger's operational career was a short one lasting only four years due to the type's performance being inferior to the F-8 Crusader. However, the US Navy's Blue Angels operated the type from 1957 until 1969 before they were replaced by the F-4 Phantom. Following their retirement, the team's Tigers were relegated to storage at Davis Monthan AFB. Only 199 F-11As were built. There is another photograph of this aircraft on this database but it is captioned with the incorrect Bu. No. 141821 (this Bu. No. belongs to another Tiger, the nose section of which is displayed on the USS Hornet).
