Based on the civilian S-62 (the first amphibious helicopter built with a flying-boat type hull), the HH-52 was selected in 1962 to be the US Coast Guard's medium-range search and rescue helicopter. The first HH52As entered service in 1963, the service eventually employing 99 examples of the type. They remained in service until 1989 and are credited with the saving of over 15,000 people. This Seaguard wears the markings of Coast Guard Station Houston, Texas. She is displayed at Pima courtesy of the National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, Florida.
