Quite a radical machine in its heyday, the CH-37 sported various innovations like a fully retractable main landing gear, pod mounted engines, a five-bladed main rotor (designed in order to allow the helicopter to continue flying even if one blade was shot off) and front opening clamshell cargo doors. At one time they were the largest and fastest helicopters in the western world. Deliveries to both the US Army and Marine Corps began in 1956 with production continuing until 1960. They went on to serve as heavy-lift transport helicopters until the early 1970s. This one wears the markings of the 90th Transportation Company, based at Illesheim, West Germany in 1965. The blue and white check markings on her nose and tail represent the regional colours of Bavaria. She is named 'Tired Dude', and was donated to the Pima Air and Space Museum by the Department of the Army.
