The Widgeon is effectively a scaled down version of the Grumman Goose. Used by the USAAF, USN and the USCG during World War II primarily as a light transport amphibian, some Navy J4F-1s however, were fitted with a single 200lb depth charge under the starboard wing. This effort paid off on 1 August 1942 when a J4F-1 sank a German U-Boat in the Gulf of Mexico. This particular Widgeon was used to test a half scale replica hull design for the Martin XP5M flying boat. She is displayed at Pima in the markings of NACA, Langley Field, Virginia, circa 1948.
