This aircraft was the personal transport of Dwight D. Eisenhower during his time as SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) commander in the early 1950s. Named 'Columbine' after the state flower of Colorado (home state of Mrs. Eisenhower) she was operated by the 7167th Special Air Missions Squadron, based at Wiesbaden Air Base, West Germany. Eisenhower went on to use two more 'Connies', Columbine II was also a VC121A and served him when during his first term as president of the United States, she survives and is registered N9463. For his second term he used one of the larger VC-121Es (the military version of the L-1079), she also survives and is on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force.
