Displayed outside the Hugh L. Dryden Flight Research Facility. This was the only X-1E built and was a modification of the second first generation X-1. The X-1E mission was to explore the potential performance improvements of using wings of extremely thin aerofoil section coupled with a more efficient engine. She made a total of 26 flights between 12 December 1955 and 6 November 1958 reaching a maximum speed of Mach 2.24 and a maximum altitude in excess of 73,000ft. The X-1E was piloted by NACA test pilots John McKay (5 flights) and Joseph Walker (21 flights).
