From a correspondent - Ex: F-BONK. G-BHWK couldn't be registered as G-BONK, since a balloon already had that registration. Amazingly, we flew past that very balloon, in G-BHWK in about 1991, but didn't notice until we used a magnifying glass to look at the balloon's letters.
