The Penlee Lifeboat and a Culdrose SAR helicopter put on a rescue display off Penzance Promenade most summers. This lifeboat, the Solomon Browne was lost with all hands on 19 December 1981 in the Union Star disaster a few miles from the photo scene, in conditions so severe the attendant Navy Sea King (XZ574) could not prevent tragedy.
