This aircraft was never a long-wing USAF variant (i.e. an HU-16B). It was built for the JMSDF as a USN model UF-2. Even after the US DOD changed its designation system in 1962 at which point all UF-2 aircraft became HU-16D's, because it was not a US-operated aircraft, it remained as a UF-2 in JMSDF service. In the late 1970's, Grumman bought it back from Japan and converted it as a civilian model G-111 under TC no. A22SO (not the same thing as a design no. G-111 long-wing conversion for the USAF, i.e. an HU-16B). By the time it was N26PR, it was officially a civilian model G-111.
